Tax Disputes with the Inland Revenue

As a business owner, we hope that your tax obligations and your relationship with Inland Revenue is straightforward. However, for some taxpayers, a dispute may arise with Inland Revenue. There are various reasons this might happen and various ways that might play out depending on your circumstances. It’s important to understand the basic disputes process and know what you need to do.

A dispute can be initiated by either a taxpayer or Inland Revenue. 


A typical start to the process may be if Inland Revenue issues a Notice of Proposed Adjustment (NOPA) because they disagree with a tax return that has been filed and are proposing to amend the return.

Inland Revenue cannot amend your tax return unless:

  • you agree to the adjustment
  • you are deemed to accept the adjustment or
  • the court system orders the adjustment

There are other ways that a dispute may emerge, but the basic process is common to them all. 

Be aware that once it’s in motion, there are specific time frames written into the process and deadlines to comply with.
